About this car
Only about 200 six-cylinder 280SE cabriolets were built with the low grille of the 3.5 V8 version, which makes this the rarest of the open W111 cars. It was restored in its original silver over black and has recently been serviced comprehensively by a marque specialist. At $199,800 it is priced above the other 280SE cabriolet in this collection; the premium is for the low-grille rarity, the books, the data plate, and the documented care. The phrase 'restored some years ago' carries much of that price, so verify the scope and age of the restoration in person.
What the photos show
- silver paint is clean and glossy in plain daylight, no repaint bill showing here
- chrome grille, bumpers and hubcaps shine bright, no re-chroming needed
- black leather seats front and rear look excellent with no cracks, no need to reupholster
- wood dash trim is glossy and complete with a clean period radio, no trim hunt needed
- black soft top is shown up and taut as well as folded with its boot, no new top to budget for
- trunk opens clean with the spare in place, no rust clean-up showing back there
- the engine bay is only seen from a distance with the hood up, so can't judge engine-bay detail, and a close look is still owed
- can't judge the underside, no underside photos in the sample, so budget for an inspection
Money: at $199,800 the photos show a complete silver cabriolet needing no cosmetic spend, with a close engine-bay and underside check the only homework left.
