Mercedes-Benz W113 buyer's guide

The Pagoda — the definitive classic Mercedes roadster.

Years: 1963–1971 · Models: 230SL, 250SL, 280SL

Overview

The W113 replaced both the 300SL and the 190SL with one car: a refined, safe, elegant roadster with a removable hardtop whose concave roofline earned the Pagoda nickname. Just under 49,000 were built across the 230SL, the short-lived 250SL, and the 280SL, and a large share came to the United States. It is the most liquid classic Mercedes market there is — prices are transparent and good cars sell quickly.

Engines

Fuel-injected sixes throughout: the 2.3-litre M127, the 2.5-litre M129 (1967 only), and the 2.8-litre M130, all with mechanical injection. Most US cars are automatic; the manual gearbox is the connoisseur's choice.

What to check

Values

The 280SL is the most valuable, the one-year 250SL the rarest. A manual gearbox, matching numbers confirmed by the data card, factory colours, both tops, and full documentation all carry real premiums. The 'California coupe' — a hardtop car delivered without a soft top — is a recognised variant, not a defect.

Buying tips

Spend your inspection time underneath and in the soft-top compartment, where rust hides. Because the market is deep, compare several cars: the difference between a good Pagoda and a dressed-up one is larger than the price gap suggests.
