About this car
This 1970 300SEL 6.3 is offered on eBay by beverlyhillscarclub in Los Angeles, CA. The asking price is $9,750. The car is finished in Dark Blue over matching dark blue leather, an automatic gearbox. The listing does not state a mileage. On a W109, check the air suspension carefully, along with rust in the sills, floor pans and around the front crossmember.
What the photos show
- blue paint is peeling off in big sheets on the hood, doors and trunk, down to primer, so a full respray is unavoidable
- rust is through the lower door bottoms, sills and rear wheel arches, so budget real metal repair, not filler
- the channel at the base of the rear window is crumbling with rust, which is major structural metal work
- chrome grille and bumpers are present and fairly straight, so rechroming may be avoidable
- front seat leather is gone and the foam is exposed and crumbling, so a full reupholster is needed
- the rear seat cushion is missing entirely and the backrest leather is split with padding hanging out, so the rear seat needs a full rebuild
- dash wood is peeling and cracked and the carpets are gone with rusty bare front floors, so the interior is a full redo
- the trunk floor mat is present but the trunk wells are rusty and stained, so add trunk rust repair
- the 6.3 V8 is complete in the bay but dusty and surface-corroded, so recommissioning costs are still unknown
- one photo is just the jack and wrench and the last photo duplicates the first, so the gallery is mildly padded
- no underside photo in the set, so the floors and frame can't be judged from photos
Money: at $9,750 the parts that are there (engine, chrome, glass) carry the value; the visible body and interior work will cost several times the asking price, so bid it as a project, not a driver.
